A spicy hot retelling of A Christmas Carol

Blurb

Marley Jacobs is dead, and Max Masters Scrooge has no time for the grieving son’s sob story. Even if Jacobs Jr. is kinda cute—for a nerd.

Daniel Jacobs is anxious, drifting, and lonely. His gut tells him he’s overdue for a dose of self care, but the thought of setting foot in a gym gives him hives. Though he craves gentle guidance, what he gets is the heavy hand of the gym’s head trainer and sleaziest playboy, Max Masters.

Accustomed to topping the leader board, among other things, Max sells Daniel on his gold package. After things get steamy in the locker room showers, Max is ready to make like a ghost and vanish, as usual. But this time, he won’t get away with his selfish antics, not if a vengeful past hookup with a powerful uncle has anything to say about it.

MM Scrooge is a spicy hot horror retelling of A Christmas Carol, as part of the collaboration Monsters & Mayhem: An MM Horror Collection, adapting some of your favorite classic horror stories with an MM romance twist.

Content Warnings:

This book’s list of potential warnings is longer than my grocery list. Buckle in. Readers, feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions. In no particular order: Dub-con that some readers may interpret as non-con. Consent issues. Poorly negotiated BDSM elements. Sexual violence/spanking. Sex as punishment. Death of a parent/grief. Medical kink. Sexually explicit scenes.

That said, this book doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that list might make it look darker than it really is. Better to err of the side of caution.

Excerpt

Just when I think my first workout is done, Max directs me back to the turf. “Now that you’ve got the hang of it, we’ll repeat each station for four rounds. Squats, rotations, rows. Ten reps each. Thirty seconds between stations. Ready?”

I widen my eyes. “I’m sorry. I could have sworn you said four rounds. I must have misheard. What?”

Max grins. “You’ve got this. Round one, Daniel. Knock it out.”

So I do what the man says and squat.

By the time I’m actually done, sweat beads on my forehead and drips down into crevices that are decidedly not meant to be wet in public. Will I be able to walk tomorrow? Time will tell. My arms are made of pudding.

Max’s warm hand lands on my damp back and squeezes my shoulder. “Nice work. You’ve got grit.”

He can’t possibly mean that, but I thank him anyway. I glance up to meet his eyes. His are hazel, ringed brown in the center and green at the edges.

“How do you feel?”

I blink. My heart pounds, and I’m gulping for air like a fish out of water, but…I feel good. Like maybe I could keep going, or I don’t know, jog somewhere or something. Not a feeling I’m accustomed to. “Great, actually.”

He leans in. He’s a head taller, but he stands close enough his breath ruffles my hair. “It’s the endorphins. They’re a rush, huh?”

“Yeah, a rush.” So this is why people work out.

His gaze lingers on mine. “You want to hit the showers?”

“Oh, I don’t need to wash up.” I didn’t come prepared for that. I don’t even have a change of clothes in my bag. “I’m going home after this. I’ll shower there.”

Max arches his dark brows and darts his tongue out, wetting his upper lip. “I didn’t ask if you needed to. I asked if you wanted to.” His eyes trail down my body like a caress and land on my groin. He looks hungry.

And now that I think about it…tasty.

“Oh.” What an offer. It’s not like me to put out on the first date, and this isn’t even date adjacent.

Orgasms fall under the umbrella of self-care, right? Opportunities like this just don’t land in my lap every day. But will sex make future training sessions awkward? I don’t want things to get weird, though rejecting him would do that too, so…

I peer up at him through my lashes, not completely lacking wiles of my own. “Now that you mention it, I am rather dirty.”

Max’s glinting smile could cut diamonds. “Right this way.”

Excerpt

Everyone could hear what they were saying, which added
another layer of heat to the embarrassment Josh already felt. He wasn’t used to attention
like this, so incredibly focused just on him.

“Like I said, that first riff you all played was magical. I mean,
it was a soundcheck, but the magic zipped up my spine and held me. I hadn’t planned on
staying for the show, but I couldn’t leave. I think there were maybe three hundred people in
the audience—”

“If that,” Casey snorted.

“We’ve grown a little since then,” Margot said.

Ish came up and put his arm around Josh’s shoulder. “My
boy Josh is magical. He’s the reason we sound so good.”

Now Josh’s cheeks hurt from the flames burning through
him. Ish seemed to delight in embarrassing him based on the smile spread from ear to
ear.

“I really want to play with you all. I know I’m new to you,
but I swear I’ll—”

“Wait.” Casey jumped up and rushed over. “Are you
serious? Like you want to play with us on stage?”

Bran turned to Casey and nodded. “Yeah, of course. I was
going to tell Munoz to fuck off when he called, but then I heard it was Eradicate Apathy, and
I jumped at the chance. I haven’t played on stage in a while, so I’d like you all to go easy on
me for the—”

“Holy shit!” Casey yelled and jumped up and down,
clapping his hands. “Sorry, we’re total dorks. I can’t believe you’re going to be on stage with
us. This is a dream come true.”

Josh stared at the group jumping around and hugging each
other as fear wove through him. Bran was too good-looking. Josh would have to watch his
reactions. Living on the bus together would be difficult. Branston Vale was definitely not the
type of guy who would ever be interested in him. Their new bass player was hot. His sex
appeal dripped from every word, every look. Josh would be helpless against that appeal.
Shit, he would have to keep control or risk blowing his load at the most embarrassing
times.

Ish caught the look on his face and stilled, then everyone
turned to stare at him. He sucked in a breath, hating that he was freaking out and now
everyone was looking at him.

“Is that okay with you?” Casey asked.

Josh shook himself, trying to push away the weirdness.
“Yeah. I—that’s—it’s great.”

His voice didn’t sound like he meant it, and he could tell
Bran had picked up on his hesitancy. Why was he holding back?

Munoz narrowed his gaze but saved him by changing the
subject, asking Bran what he was currently working on. The rest of his band members kept
the conversation going as he tried to come to grips with how he’d reacted to this sexy
man.

After an hour or so, he excused himself to the restroom and
breathed a sigh of relief as he stood alone and stared at the mirror. He shouldn’t be freaking
out, but his heart sped up every time he looked at Bran.

“Get it together.”

The door opened, and he quickly turned on the water,
washing his hands again so the person coming in didn’t think he was a dork talking to
himself. He hadn’t paid any attention to who had come in because they were in a private
area of the hotel and few people were back here. When Josh glanced up, he found Bran
studying him. A gasp escaped his lips.

Bran’s eyes narrowed, then he frowned. “I didn’t mean to
scare you.”

Josh shook his head. “No worries. I was deep in
thought.”

Bran’s lips thinned and he crossed his arms over his chest.
“Have you got an issue with me playing in the band?”

Horror washed over Josh. “No. I-I…”

Bran moved closer. “What is it then?”

Josh’s whole body heated and sweat broke out on his
forehead. He couldn’t tell this man he thought he was hot. His lungs seemed to stop
working, and his gaze accidentally flicked to Bran’s lips, looking all sexy and plump behind his
dark beard. He swore Bran’s lips ticked up before stepping back a few inches.

“I’m just a normal guy, nothing special. I’ve been listening
to you all since I first heard you. It would be an honor if you allowed me to play on stage
during Rocktoberfest.”

Josh gulped in air. He had to get past the way this guy made
him feel. “I want you.”

Bran’s eyebrows lifted in the silence that followed Josh’s
declaration, but he hadn’t meant it to be a declaration. Shit, he’d left off a word.

“There. I want you there to play with me—us. I want you on
stage to play with the band.”

It’s taken years for Dawson’s
band, AudioLock, to finally ‘make it’. Okay, maybe they hadn’t made it yet but they were
invited to perform on the big stage at Rocktoberfest. Driving the beat of the band warmed
his soul but Dawson really wished there was someone to warm his heart and
bed.

Ben Williams’ passion for music and theater is all-
encompassing but he doesn’t have a talented bone in his body. However, he does have the
mind and personality to manage everything that happens when the curtain goes up. His
ultimate goal of being a stage manager for a major rock band is in sight. He didn’t think
anything could change his focus until a certain drummer appeared on Ben’s
stage.

Dreams within reach, are Ben and Dawson willing
to change so they can sync rhythms together?

Syncing Rhythms is part of
the multi-author The Road to Rocktoberfest 2022 series. Each book can be read as a
standalone, but why not read them all and see who hits the stage next? Hot rockstars and
the men who love them, what more could you ask for? Kick back, load up your kindle and

Excerpt

Dawson climbed back into the bus with a big smile on his face.
Oh yeah, he was getting some of that man. It had been a while since he’d be this interested
in someone.

“Back so soon,” Nate said from the couch. He opened one eye
and gave Dawson a look. Whatever he saw had him sitting up quickly. “You were gone for
forty-five minutes max and got some? Shit, maybe I should’ve gone with you.” Nate smacked
Dawson’s hip and yelled over his shoulder, “Dawson scored already. Who had that on their
BINGO card?”

Chris and X stumbled out of the curtains on either side of the
bus. Looks of shock were on their faces.

“What do you mean? He’s going for being a reborn virgin,”
Chris teased as he walked to the mini fridge and pulled out a soda before sitting at the table.
Dawson could feel his emotions rolling; he was about to either lose his shit or blush head-to-
toe.

“Cool your jets, dude,” X cautioned. He was the closest to
Dawson in build. X had about three inches on Dawson but weighed less. The crowds loved
watching him thump on his bass, long fingers plucking the strings giving the structure to
their songs to balance Dawson’s drums. “So you got with someone?”

Dawson shook his head and dropped onto the couch next to
Nate. “I did not get with someone.”

“But you’re hoping to,” Chris interjected. He was two inches
shorter than Dawson’s six foot and had the chest of a wrestler. He hit the gym every day.
Said it was to keep his body in as good of shape as his voice.

“I don’t know what gave you all the impression that I was a
male ho.” Deflect and redirect.

“Not buying it, my friend. We’ve been together way too long
for you to pull this over on us. Now, spill,” Nate demanded with a raised eyebrow. Why
couldn’t he do that?

“Okay, fine. I might have met someone while I was wandering.”
Dawson shrugged and tried again for deflect. “When are we scheduled for sound
check?”

“Dude, didn’t you get any of your pent-up energy out on your
kit?” X asked, sitting in one of the chairs at the table.

Holy shit. How had he forgotten? Dawson looked
at anything other than the guys. He was never going to live this one down.

“Are you fucking kidding me? You went to find your kit because
you needed to check that it made it here in one piece and you forgot?” Chris
was snickering at Dawson. He knew he’d gone to blushing now.

“So sound check?” One more try couldn’t hurt,
right?

“I’ll bail you on this, but I want details later. Sound check is
scheduled for one tomorrow. We’re free until then. Did you find where the food was while
you were out?” X asked. “I’m getting hungry.”

Melt into the desert,
bleed into the dawn, follow the melody, the music knows the way.

Blurb

Identical in appearance, twins Winter and Tripp are as

different as night and day when it comes to everything but the music they’ve spent the bulk
of their lifetimes composing. Now they’ve attained the fame they always hoped for, and it’s
as empty and meaningless as the remains of route 66, and about as broken too. Would help
if Winter could see it. Tripp’s sure he’ll lose his shit completely the next time some random
groupie leaps on the hood of his car and begs to take a selfie, but to Winter, every night is a
party, he lives for the crazy hookups, lives for the crazy, period.

Another place they differ.

Tripp would kill for one season to slow down. Just
three months where he and Zakk could melt into obscurity and be whomever they wanted,
together. Only Zakk’s band, Tattered Angel, is on fire too and it’s starting to seem like the
music he’s always loved is hell-bent on keeping him from exploring love of a different kind.
Last year’s Rocktoberfest was an amazing triumph, this year, it’s starting to feel like the road
to the desert is burning him alive.

Would be so easy to slip off across the sand, melt
into a dune on the back of some strange, psychedelic serpent, never to be heard from again.
If only there was a way to ensure Zakk took that last ride with him.

“Okay, I’m sitting, my supper will apparently have to remain
raw a little longer.”

“It’s all for a good cause, I assure you.”

“It better be, I skipped breakfast.”

“So nibble a graham cracker and open your ears. Don’t
try telling me you don’t have any when Winter said you have s’mores at least three times a
week when you’re home.”

Huffing, Tripp yanked the drawer open and snatched the
package from inside.

“Thank you. Now, they need small shows, we need some
soft runs on the new material, so I was thinking…”

“No, hell no. Fuck you for even thinking we should go back
on the road again. I just got a new couch. We haven’t even broken it in yet. Not a single
divot.”

“Thought that’s what you and Winter would be writing
the new songs on.”

“We have, doesn’t mean we’ve made a suitable imprint
yet.”

“Okay, guess we’ll put off working the kinks out. Too
bad. Jesse suggested we invite Riley and his crew to give them a chance to work on their
new material. I hear Dez and Zakk have almost two albums worth of material. It’s a good
idea, if you ask me. Oh, and get this, Saint’s Seduction reached out to Dez, again, and tried
to get him to come back and play for them. The way I heard it; he never took the call. James
gave them the flat ‘no’ Dez had conveyed to him the previous time and hung up on them.”

“Can’t say I blame them, the guy is talented.”

“If you think so, why do you two end up foaming at the
mouth every time you’re in proximity to one another? I can practically hear you snarling
from across the room.”

Tripp sighed, ‘cause he’d asked himself that for a couple of
months now and what he kept coming back to was a relationship he didn’t know what to do
with.

He was jealous.

Not of anything musical when it came to Dez’s ability and
experience, but of the man himself and the time he spent with Zakk. Even the knowledge
that Dez was dating Riley didn’t dull the possessiveness he felt towards a man he was barely
lucky enough to see six times a year.

Wait…

Something clicked in his brain, along with a voice telling
him to stay the fuck outta his own way before he fucked things up, again.

“Are you saying it would be us, Tattered Angel and Wild
Child?” Tripp asked, excitement beginning to surge through him.

“Yup.”

“And who the hell would book that insanity?”

“James and Russ are raring to be unleashed on the
project, but there are a few hiccups to iron out.

“Like?”

“Who would headline?”

“We’ll rotate, everyone should be good with that.”

“Band members are, a few of the venues are not.”

Why did it sound like he was chewing? He’d better not be
eating anything good after the way this conversation had derailed Tripp’s meal.

“Hey, did you hear what I said about the
venues?”

Tripp pulled the phone away from his ear, scowling at it for
several seconds before warily drawing it close again. “My ears were working just fine until
you bellowed in them!”

“Then pay attention, damn. Now, what do we do about
the venues.”

Grumbling beneath his breath, Tripp tried to figure out why
he was being asked to problem-solve for an issue he wasn’t completely on board with being
a part of yet. Still. It
would provide plenty of opportunities to spend time with Zakk. “Okay,
so, we give them what they want and schedule the rest of the rotations around it.”

“Good idea on the surface, but when you see the emails
I sent you about the locations, you’ll see why the issue came up.”

“Yea, okay, I’ll take a look. Next.”

“Besides the animosity between you and
Dez?”

What happens when friendship becomes love, and you’re
presented with seemingly impossible choices while the world is watching?

Blurb

What happens when friendship becomes love, and you’re presented with seemingly
impossible choices while the world is watching?

Harvey, lead guitarist with Australian rock band,
HyperOctane, thought playing at Rocktoberfest would be the highlight of his career. He
didn’t expect a performance that would shape the rest of his life.

Ravi

Admitting his feelings for Harvey was one of the hardest
things he’d ever done. Being rejected was crushing. He never thought he’d be living the
same heartbreak years later after finally finding love.

Bo

He broke Ravi’s heart but he couldn’t ignore the feelings he
had for Harvey. It wasn’t fair on Rav, and Bo knew it was for the best, but why did doing the
right thing have to hurt so much?

Harvey

He wasn’t sure which was his biggest regret—hurting Ravi
all those years ago, or more recently giving in to temptation and having a one-night stand
with Bo. He’d always been close to his younger brother’s best friends, and now it seemed
he’d messed things up with both of them.

Now all three of them must confront their feelings for each
other. Why do things have to be so complicated?

Three of a Kind is a gay rock star romance featuring
second chances, friends to lovers, and menage.

Three of a Kind is part of the multi-author The Road to Rocktoberfest 2022 series.

Excerpt

“I think we need to talk.”

Oh God. Ravi hated the sound of those words.
They took him straight back to that night a year ago when Bo had said the very same thing
then proceeded to break his heart.

“Okkaay.” He crossed to the dresser and opened the drawer. He
fumbled with the contents as he willed his heart to slow down. Had Harvey sensed his
feelings for Bo? Or maybe Harvey just wasn’t ready for everything that had happened
between them. HyperOctane was knocking it out of the ballpark and there was so much
opportunity open to him. I’m probably holding him back.

“I can see your thoughts spinning from over here. Turn around,
Rav.”

He slowly turned and met Harvey’s eyes. Harvey patted the
bed beside him. “Come over here so we can talk properly. There’s something I need to tell
you.”

That little voice whispered in Ravi’s ear. He didn’t want to hear
whatever it was Harvey was going to say. Just the idea of it sent a wave of nausea through
him. Just when everything was going so well. Fuck, he’d been so happy lately.
Still, knowing he couldn’t put it off, he forced himself across the room.

The mattress sunk slightly under his weight, echoing his
equilibrium—he felt entirely off-balance.

“Why do I get a feeling this isn’t good news?” he finally
said.

Harvey reached for his hand, his touch warm and familiar, but
Ravi didn’t take comfort. He couldn’t, not until he knew what this was about.

“I’m not really sure how to put this.” Harvey squeezed his
fingers, green eyes hooded, voice low. “I’ve never had to deal with anything like this before.
It’s about Bo.”

And there it was. Just like that Ravi’s heart plummeted. “I think
I know what you’re going to say. I’m sorry, Harvey.”

Harvey frowned. “I don’t think so. I—”

Ravi didn’t let him finish. He wanted to lay his cards on the
table—be the first one to air his feelings, not wait for Harvey to confront him with
accusations. “He’s such a great guy, and at first I was worried that our past would come
between us and I didn’t want the friendship to be destroyed. I mean you and me, and Bo
and Parker, we’ve been friends since forever and if Bo and I didn’t get along then it would
have tough for you and Parker. I wanted things to go back to how they were before Bo and I
hooked up.” Ravi sighed. “But when he moved in while you guys were playing up the coast, it
was just so natural to slip back into how things used to be—you know, hanging out after
work, doing household stuff.”

“It’s okay, Rav,” Harvey said, obviously hearing the panic in his
voice.

Ravi forced himself to take a deep breath. Harvey didn’t look
pissed which had to mean something, right? “But I want you to know, nothing happened
between us.” He’d never do the wrong thing by Harvey, and he needed him to know
that.

“But you wanted it to,” Harvey said softly, not a question. A
statement.

Ravi felt his face flushing. He wanted to deny it, but he couldn’t
live with himself if he lied. He didn’t want to dishonour his true feelings for Bo, and Harvey
deserved the truth. “I would never cheat on you.”

Harvey lips turned up in a gentle smile. “I know you
wouldn’t.”

“Are you mad?” Ravi asked, then held his breath, not sure if he
really wanted the answer.

Perfection comes in many
forms, and true courage is beautiful.

Blurb

Preston Hawthorneonca-Stone is a warrior. In a fit of rage,
his father changed Preston’s life on a horrible day in 1994. Now a brain injury survivor,
Preston lives with his brother and their growing family. A recent addition to the Council of
Sorcery and Shifters, Preston has landed his dream job of working with animals.

Resurrected in 1995, Ridgely Walsh is dedicated to his job
and the tightknit group of friends he considers family. With his penchant for honesty, Ridgely

is the level-headed and sometimes hard-assed member of their little group. Ridgely doesn’t
play foolish games, and he accepts people at face value.

Although Ridgely yearns for a mate, nothing prepares him
for the moment he meets Preston. The beautiful jaguar-human hybrid with the big brown
eyes halts Ridgely in his tracks. Ridgely rapidly discovers his true purpose is to be a good
partner to his other half. Preston is equally taken with Ridgely but fears how the fallen knight
will handle his imperfections. Together, they must navigate the path Fate chose for them and
discover what it means to love unconditionally.

Excerpt

“That’s okay,” Ridgely said. “We’ll work around your
schedule. There are seven days in a week. We’ll work our dates into the nights you’re
free.”

“Yeah.”

The lack of enthusiasm in Preston’s voice had a chill running
through Ridgely. Although they hadn’t known each other long, they talked frequently, and
the man enchanted Ridgely. Until that moment, Ridgely had believed they were on the same
page, but perhaps he’d misjudged the situation. It was difficult to discuss it without being
able to see the emotions cross Preston’s face, and Ridgely wished he were with him.
However, there was no way Ridgely could wait until their date the following night to get the
answers he needed.

“Tell me what’s on your mind,” Ridgely prompted and
internally winced at the sharpness in his voice.

“I have challenges.”

“I know,” Ridgely responded softly. “That’s not a problem
for me.”

“Okay. I didn’t want to bombard you with them at the start
though.”

“Don’t worry so much. Talk to me.”

“I tire easily sometimes, and I also have insomnia. I’m
concerned that if I’m out most nights, I’ll get exhausted because I still have work and do my
therapies. I don’t want my schedule to overwhelm me, and it makes me sad because I want
to be with you. Maybe I should wait to do the school stuff.”

“Absolutely not, Dimples. There’s no reason we can’t
approach things casually. If we hung out and relaxed instead of dressing up for fancy
restaurants, would that make things easier for you? Because honestly, that sounds like more
fun anyway.”

“Maybe you could come to my house and have dinner with
my family.”

“And meet some cuddly kittens?”

“Yes. You could watch a movie with me in my room or take
a nap with me if you wanted. You wouldn’t even have to wear your clothes.”

Ridgely’s laughter was full-throated. “I’m going to need you
to repeat that when I can see your face.”

“I’m probably blushing, but I’ve already spent plenty of
time wondering what you look like naked.”

“I’ve used my imagination a lot lately too. Invite me to your
house for dinner.”

“Tomorrow, instead of you picking a restaurant?”

“All I need is an address.”

Snagging a pen from his desk drawer, Ridgely jotted down
the information he needed, then promised to call Preston later. After hanging up,
nervousness crept in. Although Ridgely loved the idea of a more relaxed avenue to get to
know Preston better, meeting a couple of Council leaders was intimidating.

“Okay, so I was curious before, but now I’m dying to meet
Preston,” Warner said.

Ridgely nearly jumped at the sound of Warner’s voice. So
swept up in talking to Preston, Ridgely had forgotten he wasn’t alone, which was nuts since
he’d shared an office with Warner for nearly two decades.

“What?”

“Your voice and body language completely changed when
you spoke with your mate. I’ve never seen that side of you. You were practically
gushing.”

“Clearly, I was not, but I won’t pretend I don’t like him
either.”

“I feel so good about this now. I was nervous you’d over-
analyze every aspect of your relationship and drive your man crazy.”

“Glad to hear it because, clearly, your opinion of the
situation is what matters most,” Ridgely deadpanned.

“Seriously, I must meet this beautiful dimpled
man.”

“Find some patience, Warner. Or better yet, find your other
half.”

“I wish,” Warner replied, and Ridgely did too.

Ridgely wanted everyone to have Fate pair them with
someone as wonderful as Preston was turning out to be. And the fact that Preston was
pursuing a dream pleased Ridgely. It wasn’t enough for Preston to have only pieces of what
he wanted; Ridgely intended to ensure that his mate had everything.

Excerpt

“What will you have?” he asked.

“Um, I usually get a Chocolate Mocha Supreme here, ’cause
you know… chocolate store.”

“Then I’ll have the same.”

He turned and waved at a woman who I assumed was the
manager, ordered our drinks, and asked for extra whipped cream.

Luckily, the way the store was designed, there was a small
alcove at the back where we could sit and talk in private without the staff staring at us. I was
already so self-conscious I thought I could break.

We sat in silence as the coffees were made and brought to our
table. “Thank you, Angela,” Hayden said, and I looked up in surprise that he actually knew
the woman’s name.

She blushed–a common reaction to Hayden, apparently–and
did a little curtsy before disappearing back around the corner. “I think she might have a little
crush,” I whispered, making him smile.

“She’s not who I want to impress,” he said, and then cringed.
“Sorry, that was cheesy.”

It was then I noticed he appeared to be nervous too. That
helped me feel a little better. I took a deep breath and let it out before asking what I really
needed to know if I was going to be able to settle down long enough to hang out with
him.

“Why me?” I asked.

He smiled and answered, “Why not you?”

“’Cause I’m a nobody, and you’re Hayden Koal.”

He shook his head and took a drink of his coffee before
responding. When he pulled back, a mustache of whipped cream clung to his lip. “Everyone
thinks just ’cause I’m a pop star that I’m not a normal human being. I like you, or like what I
know about you. I just thought it’d be fun to go out and get to know someone, you know,
normal.”

As he talked, the whipped cream began to run down the side
of his mouth, and I didn’t think he realized it was there until he went to touch where the
drip was. I laughed as he quickly wiped his face with his hand, then frantically began looking
for a napkin.

By the time he found one, his face was red as a beet. “So much
for first impressions.”

“Trust me,” I said, “that’s probably the best thing to happen.” I
took a drink and forced myself to get a mustache too, and when I drew back, he
laughed.

“Is that what I looked like? God, I’m happy no one got a picture
of that. I’d never live it down.”

I used my tongue to lick the whipped cream off and laughed,
saying, “I thought it was cute. It could probably go a long way in improving your image.”

When I looked back at him, he was staring hungrily at me.
“Oh,” I said, realizing licking my lip like that probably seemed sexually suggestive.

Hayden shook his head as if trying to clear his thoughts. “Wow,
so, um, I’m… I think you’re very handsome, Erik, but I have to admit, this is the first real date
I’ve ever been on, well, with a guy. I mean, I’ve been on publicity dates, but you know, not
with someone I like. So…” He paused, then quickly added, “I’m not sure how to do this
without looking like a total loser.”

At that moment, he looked so vulnerable that I couldn’t help
but reach out and put my hand over his. “You’re doing fine. Not that I’m an expert or
anything, but the mustache thing could’ve been staged ’cause it was so cute. So, don’t sell
yourself short, at least not yet,” I said, laughing. That seemed to put him at ease.

He turned his hand over, letting our palms rest together, and I
felt a happy, warm zing shoot up my arm at the intimate contact. “Okay, then,” he said, and
his nervousness morphed into a confident smile. “Tell me about yourself.”

When we no longer have
the kids to keep us glued together, will there be enough left to make us
stick?

Blurb

This is not a romance. This is what happens when life goes on, when
people grow and fall out of sync. Not out of love; some people are just meant to be.

Thomas at least hopes that is the case, even though he sometimes feels
like he’s clinging to his marriage by a brittle thread.

Frank clutches to the scraps that are left, knowing he’s the root cause of
Thomas’ grey hairs, their kids being hormonal monsters and his own sanity being
questionable at the best of times.

Gabriel needs to stop worrying and take control of his life, but with
young kids and a body that refuses to do what it’s supposed to do—to sustain and nourish
and build muscle to keep bones in place—his feels like a traitor, laughing in his face when he
struggles to keep it together. He knows he is loved. His kids are everything. But his marriage
feels like a distant memory, and he’s tumbling from one disaster into another. It’s
just…life.

Bruno thought this holiday would bring them closer together as a
family. Isn’t that what a trip abroad is supposed to do? Four weeks in the Swedish mosquito-
infested countryside, sharing a farm with strangers. He should have known better.

Life is good. But the rest? Lies. All lies.

This is the first of two books following a lifelong friendship between two families. A slice of
life from two established M/M couples, children galore, stray sheep, heat, sizzle and
laughter, this is what happens after the HEA.

The second book, Life is Right Here, will be published in December 2022.

“You know, Thomas, there’s no need to feel jealous,” Bruno
said softly.

“I’m not.” Thomas laughed again, but it sounded fake.
Hollow.

“Well, I am.” Bruno admitted with a touch of
cockiness. “I’m fucking raging that he can talk to Frank, this dude he’s just met, about things
he struggles to talk to me about. He should be talking to me. Shouldn’t
he?”

“You just said I shouldn’t feel jealous!” Thomas almost
shrieked, gripping the worktop until the wood creaked under his knuckles.

Bruno grinned. Classic psychology. Worked every time.

“You are jealous, and that’s the way it should be.
You have a very, very handsome husband who loves you to the point that he can barely see
through the love haze the two of you have going on. Frank adores you. You just don’t always
see it, but that doesn’t mean he can’t talk to other people, have close friends, talk about
things that he might not be able to talk to you about. It’s healthy and normal.”

“Bloody doctors, you’re all the same, talking a load of crap.”
Thomas was smiling underneath the stiff pose he was still holding. Thank God.

“Yup, it’s all textbook doctor bullshit, mate.” Bruno laughed.
“And I wasn’t lying about being jealous. But why would Gabriel even look twice at some
random Norwegian dude when he has all this prime Italian quality stud at home?” He
slapped his chest like some ridiculous alpha male, and Thomas chuckled and shook his
head.

“You’re such an idiot.”

“I know.” Bruno smiled, taking a step forward so he could pat
Thomas’s shoulder. “I wouldn’t make it a week without Gabriel. He keeps me going, sorts me
out. Puts me to bed at night and gets me up in the morning. Without him, I would probably
be dead.”

“Did you ever suffer from…you know. Stuff? Do you get it all?
Like, do you understand Gabriel?”

“Let me tell you something.” He took a deep breath because
this wasn’t something he’d ever talked about, and he didn’t know why he suddenly felt like
sharing. “I don’t understand much, and let me tell you, I’ve spent years specialising in the
human body and mind. Personally, I’ve made some horrible mistakes, huge mistakes, and
there are things I’ve done that I will always, always regret. I still struggle to grasp how the
human brain works. I learn new stuff every day. But I understand depression. I understand
losing control of your mind, and you do too. I bet you’ve stood at the edge of a cliff in your
head and wondered what it would be like to jump. I know I have. I’ve wobbled and struggled
and bloody lost my mind more than once, but the difference between you and me and Frank
and Gabriel…”

“Yeah?”

“There is no difference. We’re all human. It’s just our brains are
wired differently. We still live, eat, sleep, fall in love, have families and die when our time is
complete. Some of us have to try a little harder. Some of us struggle a little more. Fall a little
harder and cry a little longer. Struggle to swim against the undercurrent, while the rest of
the world seems to go with the flow. It doesn’t make us less human or worth less than
anyone else.”

It was nice to see Thomas smile, despite his shoulders sagging
and the way he shook his head like Bruno was talking nonsense.

“Seriously, dude. Don’t be jealous. Don’t create drama where
there is none. Let Frank and Gabriel have this. They need it. Well, I hardly know Frank, but
Gabriel does. We’re just a bunch of messed-up gay men on holiday. Take it for what it is.
Nothing more.”

About the Authors

Sophia Soames should be
old enough to know better but has barely grown up. She has been known to fangirl over TV
shows, has fallen in and out of love with more popstars than she dares to remember, and
has a ridiculously high-flying (un-)glamourous real-life job. Her long-suffering husband just
laughs at her antics. Their children are feral. The dogs are too. She lives in a creaky old house
in rural London, although her heart is still in her native Scandinavia. Discovering that the
stories in her head make sense when written down has been part of the most hilarious
midlife crisis ever, and she hopes it may long continue.
