Apocrypha of the Knight Shamans series by R. Roderick Rowe

“In Jamari’s time, the Knight Shamans were the glue that held the Elk Creek Tribe together.

In the beginning, the Knight Shaman was mystic, prophet, and wise man. Someone who could heal with a touch.

Before the beginning, there was a boy working to become a man and becoming legend in the process.”

The stories can stand alone, but will be better followed if read in order.

When his people are attacked by other villages, Rodney Knight uses his ability to interact with dead people’s spirits to help his community survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

Blurb

Rodney suffers through his earliest years in angst and rebellion when his father constantly rejects him. He enters young adulthood still bitter over how his father has treated him. Even so, his tribe needs the intervention of their only shaman in the Other Worlds for their very survival. As he acts out his anger, he accepts his duties and learns how to master them from a trusted mentor. Then he discovers that family isn’t limited to the blood ties, but can be so much more.

The San Francisco Book Review gave a nice summary:

“After the Great Quake of 2040, the forested lands and the lives of those in the Pacific Northwest are shaken. With both civil and social unrest still prevailing from the ideas of the 47th president, much of southwestern Oregon has been divided into tribal communities. Rodney Knight, the son of the founder of the Elk Creek Tribe, comes to age and into his own powers during this tumultuous time. At seven, he recognized his first spirits. First, a childhood friend was slain in an attack, and next, a beloved mentor lost during a battle. At seventeen, while on patrol with his unit, Rodney once again encounters a spirit that warns him of an ambush. Knowing that war is inevitable, the Elk Creek Tribe recognizes Rodney as their first Shaman. With advice from his Spirit Guide, Rodney helps lead his community through troubled times and towards the ideals that the founder had envisioned.”

Peter Williams faces a deadly world where the Trumpian government has abandoned the west after a series of massive earthquakes has devastated the land.

Blurb

The great quakes of 2040 led to the downfall of civilization in the Pacific Northwest. Here is a tale of the days of destruction and the survival of one small family that then shaped the future for a thousand years after.

Peter is just one year old when his family is stranded in the wilderness after the quakes destroyed roads, bridges, buildings, and civility. His father and mother struggle to bring him home to their city of Sutherlin through a nine-year odyssey.

Then, at the very gates of their home, they find themselves under attack by the townsmen they counted on for refuge.

Follow Peter, and Wayne and Carrie Williams as they struggle for survival in a post-apocalyptic world, meeting friends and foes all of whom set the path ahead for young Peter to either survive or perish.

The Apocrypha of the Knight Shamans is an entire series devoted to explore methods to break people out of the deep programming that civilization and culture impose on them. In short, when nearly half the people in the United States have been convinced that “Woke” is evil and anyone who is “Woke” should be severely dealt with, this series will not only show how to escape the mind-prison of our culture, but will also offer some ideas of what the human spirit gains in being truly “Woke” as opposed to what the ignorant masses have been indoctrinated to believe.

The works of Don Miguel Ruiz, Elaine Pagels, and references to the Gnostic Gospels are intertwined in this work of fiction to create a new culture, with new values, and new paradigms, thus leaving the old views of the far right behind them and becoming Paradigm Lost.

To be even more clear: MAGA’s this stuff ain’t for you!

Do you dare to look at the alternatives a new paradigm can bring into existence?

The Second Knight Shaman

“The President of the United States,” the announcer read in a somber tone, “has said that the West is on their own. Here’s a recording of his statement.”

“We don’t have any resources to bail out the blue states over there,” the Trump Heir said. “If they had any sense and were willing to support my rule, I’m sure we could come up with some support, but knowing how opposed they are to my rule, there’s just no point. God speed and thoughts and prayers to those godless heathens.”

“And that’s the position of the United States government on the western states,” the announcer said. “We’ll pause now for station identification.”

“Be sure to stop by your local Toyota dealer for the extended and extended again Toyotathon event!” an enthusiastic spokesman said as Wayne shut down the auxiliary power.

“What are we going to do?” his wife Carrie asked him while rocking their one-year-old son Peter.

“I don’t know, honey,” Wayne said. “We’ll have to figure out what’s next when we get more information. For now, I think we should get clear of the Jeep in case another round of quakes hits. We don’t want to be in here if it sinks any further.

About the Author

Roderick Rowe studied writing in college for several years, working as assistant editor and then editor for his school’s literary magazine. He also spent a term as copy editor for the campus newspaper. He is a gay man and uses this “affliction” to build characters and situations in his fictional work. Rowe has published several short stories and an occasional poem. After ending a twenty-year career unexpectedly in 2015, Rowe decided to write his first novel. “Jamari and the Manhood Rites, Part I” was completed in two months, then he settled in to conduct editing – complete new landscape design with a new Koi pond, a new library built into the spare room in his home, the cleanest his house had ever been – but the editing eventually got completed.

Find the demon box. Stop
the killer ghosts. Break the curse.

Blurb

Cassidy Kincaide runs Trifles & Folly in modern-day
Charleston, an antiques and curio shop with a dangerous secret. Cassidy can read the
history of objects by touching them, and she teams up with friends and allies who use magic
and paranormal abilities to get rid of cursed objects and keep Charleston and the world safe
from supernatural threats.

Caribbean ghosts terrorize Charleston and start racking up
a body count. Then Beckford Pendlewood, the heir to a powerful family of dark warlocks,
shows up raving about a bound demon locked in a lost box and begs sanctuary. Can Cassidy
and her friends find the demon box, stop the killer ghosts, and break the Pendlewood curse
before Beckford’s murderous cousins and the vengeful demon destroy them all
?

NoteThis is primarily an urban fantasy/supernatural
adventure with a secondary romance, but there are two different evolving MM romances
that play an important role in the book.

It is the ‘tent
pole’ series from which all the others spin off. Cassidy Kincaide is Simon Kincaide’s cousin
(Badlands), and Teag Logan, her best friend, shows up in all the rest of the Morgan Brice
books as a helpful hacker. Simon and Vic (Badlands) come to Charleston in this book and
play a big role in fighting the big bad, as does Dante the pirate ghost from The Rising and
Loose Ends (Badlands). Teag is in a long-term relationship with Anthony, Beck and Logan
(new characters in Inheritance) fall in love, and Simon and Vic are badasses–so there are
three MM couples who play major roles with the plot even though the MC (Cassidy) isn’t
gay. (She has a boyfriend but there’s no MF sex on page beyond very minor kisses and
cuddles.)

Inheritance falls between Flame and Ash and Unholy in the in-book timeline (and slightly before Loose Ends, oddly enough). Also, Unholy
takes Seth and Evan to Charleston where Cassidy and her crew play an essential role in
defeating that book’s witch disciple.

The road must have its blood

Blurb

Hunger Strike, The Road of Bones drops you two centuries into the future. The moon has been sheared in two, much of the Earth is a wasteland, and the world is ruled over by witches and sorcerers with cruelty and indifference. When the town of Endly is threatened by the tinkerer and his army of animorphs, sixteen-year-old Hunger Strike, alongside his best friend, Winda, and his adopted brother, Denver, devises a plan to move thousands of its residents across the treacherous wilds, in the hopes of finding a new home within the borders of a strange land far to the west, known only as The Weird Wood.

Excerpt

Winda is the adult in the room. Always. She approaches challenges logically. Where I’m a bumbling mess of emotions, Winda has a way of removing emotion from any given situation, and then, with a clear head, she begins to formulate a plan of action.

So, I relate every detail of the past couple of hours to her, ending on a sour note with the impending invasion, and then I sit back, fold my arms across my chest, and I watch the gears spinning behind Winda’s eyes, a flickering candle between us.

A minute passes. Two. Three.

“The beasts!” she shouts suddenly, jumping to her feet and kicking the leg of the table. Next, to my horror, she pulls her machete from its sheath and, in one lightning fast motion, she stabs its tip into the table, plants her hands, locks eyes with me, grits her teeth and she spits; “Well, I’m not going down without a fight, you hear?? We’ll certainly die, but we’re damned well going to take a few of them bastards down with us, and we’ll bathe in their blood together before our glorious deaths!”

I knit my eyebrows together. Clearly, someone has taken my Winda and they’ve replaced her with a person who delights in taking baths in other folks blood. I, however, do not. Where’s the adult in the room? The lack of emotion? The clear-headed plan? We really are screwed if even Winda can’t wrap her head around this thing and spit out a strategy other than bathing in blood and glorious deaths – a duo of rather unappealing options in my less-than-knowledgeable opinion on the subject.

“Um – I don’t like that plan, Winda,” I whisper, painfully aware that Denver is in my bedroom and probably listening to every word we say.

“What else is there??” she spits back at me, once again taking her seat.

I furrow my brow. “Running?”

“Leave – all these people to be slaughtered?” Winda hisses across the table at me. “Is that what you’re suggesting, Hunger?”

“No, Winda, that’s not what I’m suggesting,” I say.

“Then what?”

“We take them with us,” I say.

There’s a pause while Winda looks across the table at me like I’ve just grown a hideous extra head or two. “There are – thousands of people living in Endly, Hunger.”

“Two thousand, three hundred and thirty-seven,” a raspy little voice says.

I glance over my shoulder. Denver is peeking into the kitchen from the hall.

Winda sneers at him.

He gulps.

Denver has always been quite anxious around Winda. It might be her machete, or the pistol, or the fact that he overheard us discussing how she had accidentally murdered her pet cat, Mr. Wiggles. Or all three.

About the Author

T.J. Pike has been writing since splashing down on this tiny blue marble in late 1986, when a native of the planet observed what a brilliant liar he was. “You should either write a book or go into politics,” the woman was heard to say. Having been a VIP guest at the White House several thousand times over the past hundred years, he chose the former. Hand cramps, cold feet and early mornings soon inspired him to invent the computer, wool socks and coffee, though not in that order. Pike is currently number one on the Epsilon Delta Bestsellers list, and if you visit the Planet Arkon, you can find a bronze statue of him in the alleyway behind Smirk’s Liquor Mart, just to the left of the dumpster. Dubbed the most prolific story-teller of his time by Deckon-the-deceiver, Pike currently resides in New England, where he spends his days in the clouds, atop his dragon, Dinky, only stopping to allow her to feed on the occasional villager or two.

Blurb

When Hyam traveled to Lisedan he was lost and in search of a destiny. Alyson and Lettie thought their lives were over when Mana Hunters enslaved their village. Together, the three of them set forth on a path none of them had ever imagined. War, and a fight for the fate of magic, would lead them across a continent and reveal secrets long hidden.

Set forth on a fantasy adventure in the Noble Mages verse, where magic runs through everything. This exciting introduction to the Life Mage Trilogy will have you on the edge of your seat with each exciting twist. Get to know the diverse cast of characters that make the verse the extraordinary place that it is.

Excerpt

“On three, we begin the assault. One… two… three,” I said. The illusion on the alley dropped as I dived out into the street. I spotted two guards standing not twenty feet from where I exited the alley and began my assault by casting a confusion spell. “Spirit Mind Confuse,” I incanted, directing my mana at the two guards. The first fell into the confusion easily, but the second had protected his mind behind a layer of spells. Before I could break into his mind, he cast a counterspell and attempted to push back into my mind. I focused my attention on him.

“Attack the guard on the right,” I ordered my squad. “I’ve got the one on the left.”

With my orders issued, I left the other guard to my allies and focused on the mind mage. His attacks were weak but unpredictable, so I decided not to counter-attack. Instead, I layered protections on my mind and, hidden beneath the protections, a break spell that grows stronger the more it’s attack. “Spirit Mind Strengthen and Break, Spirit Mind Strengthen and close, Spirit Mind Strengthen and Grow, Spirit Mind Close and Renew,” I incanted. Several layers of protection went up around my mind.

I walked calmly towards him, letting him know I was not afraid. He broke through fire one layer of protection, then another, and another. I was less than five feet from him now. I could see the moment in his eyes when the final layer of protection broke, and his mind broke with it. the sheer terror as the world around him morphed into something from his worst nightmare. I did not let him suffer for long. I pulled a dagger from my belt and slit his throat in one quick slash.

I took a quick look around. The other guard was dispatched quite easily. A third guard had come up from behind us. He was quickly dispatched as well.

First guards eliminated, moving on* I said telepathically to Alyson and Anisha.

“Keep moving forward,” I ordered out loud, leading the charge past Alyson’s group, who had already eliminated three guards and only had two left standing. Anisha’s group was just engaging and were locking into a battle of five on five, though I could see three more down a side street.

Alyson, once you’ve dispatched your guards, back up Anisha’s squad, I ordered and lead my squad farther onward still.

Confirmed, came Alyson’s reply.

“We didn’t have far to go before we reached the barricade of soldiers, at least ten, with more on the way. Things were starting to get dangerous, and we were still six blocks away from the tower. a wall of flame burst up between us and the enemy soldiers as they began sending spears made of earth and ice raining down on us.

Earth Geo Control and Protect,” I incanted. I brought up small bits of earth all around us that redirected the spears enough that they hit the ground around us instead of hitting us. Even still, I saw one of my squad fall as an ice spear went through his ankle.

The hail of ice and earth kept coming, as more Enualians joined the barricade. This fight delayed us, and the other two squads caught up. they started throwing their own earth and fire spears back at the Enualians while the water mages attempted to douse the flame barrier. I watched as we gained the advantage. I continued deflecting the enemy’s projectiles and, just when it looked like we were going to win and push through, the unimaginable happened.

About the Author

Guinevere E. Mayberry is a fantasy novelist and the author of the new book, Twin Mages, the first book in the Life Mage Trilogy, and the exciting new storyverse, Noble Mages. The Noble Mages verse started with a simple question: What would the world be like if everybody could use magic? From there it took off, and Guinevere had no idea how tightly this idea would grip her imagination. From what was intended to be a single romance novel, her writing evolved into two fantasy adventure trilogies and 3 supplementary novels.

When growing up, books were a constant companion to Guinevere. From the romance stylings of Nicholas Sparks, to the fantasy that is the Harry Potter series, Guinevere would read anything she could get her hands on. Her classmates were known to comment on how she could always been seen, walking down the hallways with her nose in a book. And even back then, she knew what she wanted to do. She wanted to be the next author that a new generation would look back on and say “Her books helped me through a dark time.”
