Is young dancer Shelly Sheridan transgender? What does that mean?

Will Shelly’s new guardian, the uncle Shelly’s never met, understand? What’s next in Shelly’s life?

Blurb

Suddenly homeless, young dancer Shelly Sheridan, heartbroken at Christmas, is taken in by an uncle Shelly has never met and didn’t know existed. The burly ex-Marine uncle and his husband welcome Shelly with a shower of love and acceptance. Their friend Estrella, a retired ballet star, is enraptured by Shelly’s dancing.

Shelly makes a new friend the first day of school in this strange place but isn’t happy, feeling out of place and very different from the other boys. The new friend eventually suggests something Shelly didn’t even know was possible. Could Shelly be transgender?

When Shelly embraces this new idea, problems immediately arise. His former nanny doesn’t approve, and the trustee of his mother’s estate fights Shelly’s newly formed decisions.

With his new family’s unconditional love, Shelly hopes all will be well. It’s Christmas once again, and it will be a merry one if Shelly’s problems go away, and Christmas works its magic.

Excerpt

We barely got through the front door before Greta scooped me into her arms.

I finally pulled away so I could look Greta in the eyes. I was gonna tell her to back off. I’d had enough of whatever she was doing — loving, laughing, crying, whatever. I had to get upstairs to text Mimi. I was gonna give her an earful for ruining our special time. But I saw the deepest heartache in Greta’s eyes, deeper than I’ve ever seen in anyone’s.

“I’m so sorry, Liebchen. She loved you so much. You were her treasure.” And then she thrust something into my hand. “Keep this. Keep it safe. She would want you to have it.”

I opened my fingers, and there was the ballerina necklace. Why are you giving me my mother’s necklace? And what is all this you’re saying?

And then I heard the booming voice. Unmistakable. My mother’s lawyer. Mr. Stern. Standing in the arch leading to our living room. Commanding the world in his dark gray three-piece suit. He musta had a closet full of those suits. He never dressed any other way.

Why is he here?

Looking over half-glasses, he ordered, “Come here, son.”

I’m not your son.

He held out his hand, his fingers gesturing I should follow him. His face was stern, like his name, not a trace of a smile. Greta gave me a nudge in his direction. I followed him into the living room. He pointed toward the sofa. “Sit.”

Greta, right behind me, lowered me onto the soft sofa cushion. She sat next to me, closely — like she was protecting me. Shawn too, who I had forgotten was even there, followed and sat in the chair facing us. Mr. Stern towered in his dark suit, his grim face hovering. That face didn’t bother me. He always looked like that. Angry.

“Sheldon, I have some news for you,” he said. “I don’t know how to say this, but I’ve always felt bad news is like a Band-Aid. Yank it off, and it doesn’t hurt as much. So I’m just going to say it.” He paused — a long time.

What is all this yank it off stuff, if he isn’t going to tell me? It can’t be as bad as he makes out. My mother probably is going to be gone longer than the two days Greta said she’d promised.

“Son, your mother’s car slid out of control tonight. She was going up the mountain, the road must have been more slippery than she planned for — who knows? — and she lost control.”

What? I yelped. “What hospital is she in? Take me there. Now.” The anger I wanted to text her was gone, replaced by worry.

Mr. Stern held his hands up, palms out. He patted the air like he was motioning for me to sit, although I hadn’t gotten up, and he was not even close enough to touch me. Greta put her arm around me. Even Shawn, I noticed, looked sad.

“Boy, I’m sorry. Your mother’s dead.”

Uh-uh. Not possible. Mimi’s in Park City. She’s at a client meeting.

“You hear me, son? Amelia died tonight.”

“No,” I lunged at him. “You’re crazy. My mother’s with her client. She made Shawn take me to the ballet. Very important meeting.” I beat his body with both fists until I suddenly stopped. I stood a moment. “Somebody’s told you a lie, Mr. Stern.”

Mr. Stern was playing a joke or he’d been given bad intel, as they say, or something, at least, was wrong, very wrong. My mother was not dead.

“Sheldon,” he said, “you’ve got to face it.” As he pushed me back to the sofa, he said, “Your mother, Amelia Sheridan, is gone.”

Greta leaned over and talked in my ear. “It’s true, Liebchen. I wish it weren’t, but it is.”

Greta would never play a trick on me like that. If she said it was true, it was.

I screamed. A blood-curdling wail. A scream that coulda woke the dead. Neighbors miles around musta heard it.

When I stopped, I stopped. I wasn’t wasting another tear because it wouldn’t bring my Mimi back. I remember thinking, “Lord –” I didn’t even believe in God “– please put my life back together. I’ll go to church. I’ll be the best little Mormon boy I can be. Just bring Mimi back to me.”

But God wasn’t listening.

About the Author

A life spent in Texas led to a relocation adventure, and native Texas author Russell J. Sanders now resides in Las

Vegas, Nevada. He and his husband were compelled to set out for parts unknown, and that led them to Vegas, where they are supremely happy. But they don’t stay put. They’ve traveled the world, journeying to England, France, Italy, Japan, India, Bali, Jakarta, Toronto, Quebec City, Nova Scotia, Vancouver, Alaska, and Hawaii. And his novels are infused with locations as near as Ft. Worth, Chicago, Houston, and Las Vegas and as far away as Halifax. Who knows where he will lead readers next?

But one thing is known, there will be Mexican food. Russell’s on a quest to check out the Mexican cuisine in places both near and far. The not-so-good he has tried was in Wyoming; Jakarta, Indonesia, though, has some pretty decent enchiladas. The quest is to try, not to always be satisfied at what is found. So this Mexican food loving teacher, actor, director, singer, chef, and author loves adventure. And mostly, Russell’s goal is to tell the world, through his writing, that we are all put on this earth to love one

Christopher has settled into life as a single father to his twins, Loren and Christine. Content with his life, he is contemplating the imminent return of their mother Laura, who has been traveling through Europe for nearly a year, when he meets Benjamin, a direct descendant of the sun. Suddenly, his contentment is upended as he tries to understand the reason for their meeting. Despite what Benjamin says, that they are meant to be together,

Christopher initially tries to hold Benjamin at arm’s length, believing that he is only to be for Benjamin what Joseph was to him—a friend and mentor.

Excerpt

Opening scene from book 3: When the Sun and Moon Touch

Their laughter brought me great joy as I watched Loren and Christine mount the short flight of steps and slide down the slide on their behinds. They were quite independent, except for each other, even at the age of two, and had refused my assistance. While they romped, I sat on the bench to watch and enjoy what had turned out to be a lovely day for the end of March. In this moment I felt as though I had not a care in the world.

The sound of an email arriving on my phone startled me. Pulling it from my jacket pocket, I was surprised to see it was from Laura, as it was rare to get one from her.

Christopher

I am planning on returning at the beginning of May. Please let the rental company know they need to have the tenants vacate by the end of April. Thanks.

Laura

That was it. There was nothing about how she was doing or what she planned to do upon her return. She did not even ask after the twins. But then she never asked about them. I tried not to read anything into this, but it was not easy.

It had been nearly a year since Laura had left our children in my sole custody while she backpacked her way around Europe in order to find herself, something I had supported both emotionally and financially. She never let on how she was doing in any of her very short emails. And now, she was coming back.

I put my phone away and looked at the twins, thinking about what Laura’s return could mean for us. Would Laura still feel the same way about things as she had when she left: that the twins belonged to me and not to her?

“Excuse me?”

Blinking at the sound of someone’s voice, I looked up to see a handsome man looking down at me with grey-green eyes that were all the more striking given his dark coloring. Suddenly, something flitted within his eyes, and I caught my breath. Could it be? Composing myself, I said, “Hello, may I help you?”

“Hi. No. I,” The stranger paused, suddenly flustered, “Sorry to disturb you, but are those children playing on the slide yours?” he blurted out.

“Yes, they are.”

“I thought so. They look just like you.” He held out his hand. “My name’s Benjamin Johnson.”

“I am Christopher Dunn,” I replied, taking his hand and then indicating the place beside me on the bench, “You may join me if you wish.” I had to find out if what I had seen was indeed there.

Benjamin sat beside me, looking down at his hands while I looked at him. Looking up, he seemed about to say something and then stopped.

“Yes?” I prompted.

“Yes, what?” He stammered.

“Sorry, I thought you were going to ask me something.”

“Um, I was, but never mind.”

“No, please. Tell me what you were going to say,” I said, giving him a small smile of encouragement.

“Well, and I know this will sound ridiculous, but I had this weird feeling that something led me to you. God, I’m sorry. That sounds like some bad pickup line,” Benjamin said, laughing to cover up his embarrassment. Even with his dark skin, I could tell he was blushing.

“I do not think it sounds crazy at all.” I turned to face Benjamin, giving him my full attention. “Tell me more about this feeling.”

“I don’t know that there’s anything more to tell.”

“I think there is and would like to hear it,” I said, staring intently into his eyes, still amazed by what I saw there. What were the chances that I would meet someone like Joseph here in Balboa Park, seemingly by chance? But no, Benjamin had been guided to me if his statement was true.

“Um, okay, well, I was walking through the park and felt this pushing sensation against my back whenever I stopped to look at anything. It continued until I saw you.”

“Has there ever been another time you felt this?” I asked, not moving my eyes from his face.

“No, I don’t think so.”

“I see.” For some reason, I did not believe him. “I take it you just moved to San Diego.”

“How did you know?”

“Your accent, for starters.”

“Oh, yeah. I guess that is a giveaway. I keep forgetting that here, I have an accent. I moved here in mid-January from Atlanta.”

“Was there a special reason for the move?”

“A job.”

His words surprised me. “Oh. Had you been looking for a new job?” I said, recalling that I had moved to San Diego for a similar reason.

“Actually, no, I hadn’t been looking. I got a call from a recruiter and . . .” Benjamin paused.

“And?”

“Sorry. I just remembered that when I got the call about the job, I felt something was compelling me to take it. Kind of like what I described to you just now about being guided to you. But that must have been my imagination as well.”

“I see. You felt yourself being pushed to move here, and you felt the same sensation leading you to me,” I said, more to myself than to him.

“Crazy, isn’t it?”

“On the contrary, Benjamin, I find it very plausible.”

“Are you saying that I felt that desire to take the job here in order to meet you?”

“It is entirely possible,” I replied, still marveling at the coincidences of our experiences.

“But what possible reason could there be?”

That remains to be determined.”

Excerpt

The spirit of Fredrick’s mom appeared in front of the pantry doors. Like the day before, she wore jeans with a long-sleeved blue t-shirt. Orange conch earrings still dangled from her ears. She narrowed her eyes at them.

“God!” Toni shot to his feet, and Largo jumped off the table and scrambled out of the room.

Chalsey froze, her can halfway to the can opener.

“I told you it’s none of your business!” Marilyn Smith Anderson snapped. Also like before, her short, permed hair was dyed brown in a perfect imitation of life. “Quit digging around in my life. All three of you have secrets you want to keep. So stay out of mine.” She pointed at the angel figurine collection. “And put my angels back where you found them! I didn’t give you permission to get rid of my possessions.”

The entity vanished.

Fredrick stared at the empty spot, too numb to panic. Sounds just like her. Can’t be her. But sounds just like her.

Toni had pressed himself into the kitchen corner.

Chalsey set down the can with a thump, as if her arm muscles gave out.

The electricity popped back on, a dozen electronic devices beeping.

“Well. That happened.” Fredrick turned toward Toni and discovered he was pale and sweating. I bet he’ll leave and never come back. “My life: the sudden horror novel. I write horror. I didn’t expect to live it.”

You already have lived it, said a conversational voice in his mind. That’s why you write it.

Fredrick cringed. Touché. “Okay. Why don’t you go outside into the sunlight?” Behold the power of shock. Now I’m as calm as Chalsey. Or fake calm, anyway. “Can you stand or sit on the grass and ground yourself?”

“Mmm,” was the extent of Toni’s reply. He edged out of the corner, slipped around Fredrick, and shot out the back door.

That’s what you saw yesterday?” Chalsey’s tone was sharp.

“Yep.”

Chalsey shook her head. “That’s the most powerful evil entity I have ever seen. Or even heard of.” Her voice was strained. “That has to be the demon.”

“My mom died and became a demon?” Fredrick was only half-joking, and he burst into laughter. “God, that’s amazing!” Even to his own ears, his laughter sounded hysterical. My mom, the demon!

Abruptly, with no warning inside of himself, Fredrick grabbed an angel off the counter and hurled it at the floor with all his strength. It shattered, tiny white shards flying everywhere. “You bitch! You tortured me!”

Chalsey jumped and knocked into the refrigerator.

“God! Sorry. I’ll clean that up in a minute.” Fredrick raced out the door after Toni, needing fresh air and a large, open space. The blasting heat of the June sun hit Fredrick’s face, and he inhaled the thick, humid air. Get it together, man. You’ve got to get it together. Throwing things like an angry teenager isn’t gonna cut it.

Fredrick closed his eyes and lifted his face, the sunlight halfway piercing his eyelids. Mother Mary, if you’re real, deliver me.

Blurb

Clyde’s idyllic afternoon in the surf with his mates is
interrupted by the news that there’s been a quadruple suicide in an apartment overlooking

the beach.

Two of the deceased are the parents of Barry Wilkinson,
one of Clyde’s childhood friends, a man he hasn’t seen since Clyde donned the khaki and left
for war. Wilkinson engages Clyde to discover the identity of a mysterious woman who has
been left a huge sum of money in his father’s will.

On the surface, what appears to be a straightforward case
evolves into a complex story of deception, lies, violence and murder. Relationships are
tested, new ones formed and Clyde discovers that those connections that seem unrelated
are closely linked behind a veil of secrecy.

The early summer of 1957 is a time in which Clyde nearly
loses everything he holds dear—his own life included—all because of two couples who died
while playing bridge at the beach.

Excerpt

My awareness of Harry’s arrival was having my swimming
trunks pulled down to my ankles then a grinning redhead surfacing between Mark and
me.

“Take your foot off my cozzies, Jones,” I said, trying not to
laugh and vainly struggling to pull them back on.

“Did he pants you?” Mark asked.

“Yes, and if it wasn’t for you, Mark,” Harry said, “I’d be
twirling them over my head and racing him to the beach.”

A large wave slapped us in the face; we’d been so busy
laughing none of us had spotted it.

“I’ve ordered a float for Mark,” Harry said to me. “Do you
think you could pick it up while I chat with my favourite dick?”

“Don’t take him out too far,” I replied, smiling at Harry’s
purposeful innuendo. Mark’s eye-roll was slight, but noticeable.

“I’m not totally clueless, Clyde. I know he can’t swim. I just
want to show him how to use the float and see if we can’t catch a few waves.”

“All right. See you in a bit.”

I put my shoulder into the next decent breaker and body-
surfed to the beach. I recognised the lad in charge of the float rentals. We locals called them
floats or floaters, but to visitors they were known by their brand name: Surfoplanes. The
long black rubber blow-up surfboard-type things were very popular with people from the
western suburbs who weren’t used to swimming in the ocean. They were very cheap: only
sixpence an hour to hire.

“How’s it going, Barney?” I asked. “I thought you were
working for my mate Craig at his pool these days?”

“Nice to see you, Mr. Smith,” he replied, his eyes fixed on
the front of my swimmers. “When are you going to wear those sexy yellow speedos I keep
hearing about?”

“You know I’m taken, Barney, and you get to see me naked
nearly every morning at the pool …”

“Yes, but somehow the way men fill out their cozzies and
imagining what’s hidden in them is far more alluring than the bare truth … not that you’ve
got anything to worry about on either count, Mr. Smith.”

I shook my head at his wink and was about to ask him
sarcastically how he knew what the word “alluring” meant when I heard someone call out
my name.

“Here, take your float, Mr. Smith,” Barney said. “I just need
to nick off for a second.”

It was when I turned that I understood Barney’s sudden
disappearance. “Hello, Clyde,” the policeman said.

“Gidday, Dave. What brings you down to the beach … and in
uniform?”

“Looking for D.S. Dioli. He told me this morning at work that
he was having a half day off and spending the afternoon at the beach with you and your
mate Luka Praz.”

“He’s in the water. Want me to get him for you?”

“Bloody hot day like this, I’m tempted to take my clobber
off and go fetch him myself.”

“Problems at work?”

“Yeah, bad one, Clyde. Four dead. Looks like a suicide
pact.”

I whistled softly. “Where?”

He turned and pointed to the north end of the beach.
“Baden Street, number five, top floor.”

“What, the Wilkinsons’ place?”

“You know them?”

“Sure thing, Dave. I hauled Sidney Wilkinson into the nick
countless times just after I first started. Petty stuff, mostly: handling stolen goods,
moneylending, associating with known criminals. He was the lowest of the low back then,
but out of the blue opened a jewellery shop up at Peter’s Corner and seemed to have gone
straight. Suicide? You said there were four dead?”

“I don’t know much about it yet. But the D.I. told me to
bring D.S. Dioli in; he wants him on the case.”

I snorted. Typical of Brendan, telling Mark to fuck off and
take a break because he was annoyed with him, next minute calling him into work by
sending a constable on the first half day Mark had taken in ages. Although Brendan was a
very close friend, when it came to business there were very strict lines never to be crossed
that sometimes challenged our friendship.

“Are we still on for tonight, Clyde?”

“Of course we are. Last revision on forensic procedures,
after which you’ll piss in your detective’s exam on Thursday morning.”

“What will I bring?”

“Just yourself. I’m cooking Moroccan food. Harry will be
home at half six—he’s in charge of dessert—and we’ll eat around half past seven if that suits
you.”

“Thanks. I owe you one.”

“You owe me more than one, Dave. But seeing I used to
babysit you when you were a toddler, I feel you’re part of the family. Now, I better go get
Mark.”

“Clyde …”

“Yes, mate?”

“There’s another personal thing I want to talk to you about
sometime. Can I take you out for a bite to eat or for a beer sometime?”

“Why not tonight over dinner? Harry’s
trustworthy.”

“I’d rather it be just between you and me.”

“Trouble with Katie?”

“Well … sort of, but as I said, it’s personal.”

“Any night but Wednesday, Dave.”

“Thanks, Clyde.”

As I ran down the beach with the float under my arm, I
glanced up over the north end. Had I not been looking for them, I may not have noticed how
many cars were parked outside number 5 Baden Street.

As Search for Complete left off, the birth of his twins had just completed
Christopher. However, though he has what he had searched so long for, he now must deal
with the associated costs, namely the unraveling of his relationship with Laura, the mother
of his twins. The birth of the twins should have brought Laura joy, yet, instead, she finds
herself on an intense emotional rollercoaster. Laura resents Christopher’s
happiness—resents that he is a better mother than she is. But most of all, Laura
resents that the twins are Christopher’s spitting image—nowhere does she see herself in
them. Christopher fears his happiness in becoming a father has become Laura’s undoing. As
he tries to help her adjust to the reality of their situation, Laura struggles to find herself in
the tangled mess of their relationship.

In The Price of Happiness, Stephen Hardy has created a profound and moving
novel on the themes of parenthood, identity, love and loss—and the cost of getting what we
want.

Christopher has settled into life as a single father to his twins, Loren and Christine. Content
with his life, he is contemplating the imminent return of their mother Laura, who has been
traveling through Europe for nearly a year, when he meets Benjamin, a direct descendant of
the sun. Suddenly, his contentment is upended as he tries to understand the reason for their
meeting. Despite what Benjamin says, that they are meant to be together, Christopher
initially tries to hold

Benjamin at arm’s length, believing that he is only to be for Benjamin what Joseph was to
him—a friend and mentor.

Excerpt from Book 1

I began to question accepting Laura’s invitation when I
heard the noise coming from the backyard as we approached the house. I disliked crowds,
and it sounded like an immense crowd was on the other side of the gate.

People were everywhere—seated on lounge chairs
scattered around the patio or at the rectangular dining table or milling about in various
groups—talking loudly over the blaring music. Laura’s voice broke through the noise.

“I don’t see Peter anywhere. He might be inside. Shall we
find him?”

“By all means. I would feel uncomfortable attending his
party without meeting him.”

I followed Laura into the house. As we passed through the
living room, my eyes fell on a few framed photos of a handsome couple on the wall.

In the kitchen, a solitary male figure was removing a tray of
croissants from the oven.

“Hello, Peter.”

As he turned around, I recognized Peter as one of the men
in the photos. Tall and slender, with dark hair and a mustache waxed into handlebars, there
was a dapperness to him that I found pleasing.

“Hey, Laura. Lovely to see you!”

After setting the hot tray down, Peter hugged her.

“Peter, I want you to meet Christopher. He just moved here
from Seattle and works with me at the station.”

“How do you do, Peter?“

Having grown used to the reaction my presence caused, I
smiled patiently as Peter, unable to speak right away, shook my offered hand.

“I hope you do not mind my crashing your party. Laura
assured me that you would not object to her bringing me.”

“No, of course, I don’t mind.”

The words tumbled out one on top of the other.

“Is there anything we can do to assist you?”

“No, I have it all under control, thanks. Please help yourself
to the food and drinks out on the patio.”

“We will. Thanks,” Laura said, taking my arm and steering
me back through the living room.

“Peter is very nice,” I commented as we stepped through
the doors and headed towards the drinks table. “Can I make you something?”

“A mimosa, thanks. Yes, Peter’s a sweetie.”

We stood sipping our drinks as I scanned the crowd of
mostly men, a mix of young and old, before Laura took me around, introducing me to the
people she knew.

I instinctively searched their eyes for the essence of
another while ignoring Laura’s scrutinizing gaze.

Laura needed to use the bathroom, so she left me standing
under the large Ficus tree where we had sought shade from the sun. Within minutes of her
departure, I was surrounded by a large group of people vying for my attention. Carrying on
multiple conversations was challenging, but I did my best to make each person feel they had
my full attention.

He caught my attention on the periphery of my vision: tall
and well-built, resembling the small statue of the god Mars that sat on the table in Joseph’s
shop. Our eyes met, and I felt my heart skip a beat, seeing something flash in his eyes.
Smiling hopefully, I extended my hand to him.

“Hello, my name is Christopher Dunn.”

As he shook my hand, I took the opportunity to search his
golden-brown eyes. My initial hope turned to disappointment, for while something was
there, it was not another’s essence. Though disappointed, I was intrigued.

“Davidmartelli.”

He slurred the two names into one in his haste to get the
words out.

As I gazed into his eyes, the feeling of a purpose to our
meeting appeared—first Laura and now David.

“It is a pleasure to meet you, David Martelli,” I said, saying
his name distinctly.

David blushed attractively, causing a twinge in my
heart.

“Can I get you a drink?”

He looked so crestfallen when I held up my cup that I was
tempted to down my drink and ask him for another.

“Oh, you have one.”

“I do, but I appreciate you asking.”

I gave him a smile to back up my words. It was apparent
that David was struggling to find something to say, the frustration evident in his handsome
features. I wanted to get him away from the people surrounding us and talk to him alone,
but I did not see how I could do so without offending everyone else.

Conscious of the eyes watching us, David blushed again and
backed away.

For some reason, I knew that this behavior was out of
character for him. Watching him walk away, I hoped we would meet again as I wanted to
discover what I saw in his eyes.

Welcome to Crescent Hills
where beauty only runs so deep. Scandal lurks just below the surface behind the
McMansions, designer clothes, and fancy cars. And a death will bring the lies, secrets, and
betrayals to a boil.

Blurb

Welcome to Crescent Hills, where beauty only runs so
deep. Scandal lurks below the surface behind the McMansions, designer clothes, and fancy
cars. When the town is shaken by the disappearance of journalist Ivy Fields, whispers of
betrayal and intrigue begin to unravel the threads binding its elite residents.

Audrey, haunted by her own past, is determined to
unveil the truth behind Ivy’s disappearance, hoping to find closure she never received.
Amidst this, Marcia grapples with the confines of her seemingly perfect marriage, leading
her down a dangerous path. At the same time, a young Ben navigates the complexities of
love, friendship, and societal expectations. Meanwhile, Cassandra’s life gets disrupted by a
ghost from her past.

As Crescent Hills residents confront their own
dilemmas, the shadow of Ivy’s disappearance looms large. For behind every beautiful
façade, there are secrets yearning to be exposed, and as they say, the past always finds a
way to catch up.

Excerpt

Birds screeched when Audrey opened her eyes. She
yawned, then stretched. Her back hairs stuck up. Audrey might’ve been lying on the seating
of the pontoon boat, but black no longer veiled the sky. Instead, sunlight beamed from the
cloudless sky.

Audrey scanned the boat. Ivy was gone.

Dread filled Audrey’s insides—she couldn’t think of one
logical explanation as to why Ivy would no longer be on the boat. Audrey did the only thing
she could and leaned up against the edge of the boat and peered into the water. No sign of
Ivy.

Something vibrated from her jean’s right pocket and she
whipped out her iPhone. Sawyer was calling her. “Hello?” Audrey asked.

“I wanted to see how you were doing this morning.” Sawyer
chuckled. “And don’t worry. I’m not mad you decided to have a fun night with Ivy. Just glad
Ivy texted me about you staying over at her place. Most people wouldn’t be so courteous.”

“I’m still on the boat,” Audrey blurted. “And Ivy is nowhere
to be found.”

“Come again?”
“We never went back to shore and had
dinner.”

“How much did you drink last night?”
“Just one gin and tonic.”

A folded piece of paper on the driver’s seat of the boat
caught Audrey’s attention, and she rushed over to it. “I’m sorry, but I’ve gotta go,” she said.
“I’ll be home as soon as I can.”

Audrey pressed END before shoving her iPhone back into
her pocket. Then, she unfolded the note and read it.

Dear Audrey,
I’m so sorry to have to tell you this, but I’ve
been very unhappy

with my life for a long time, and I’ve decided to end my
life.

I know my suicide will probably come as a shock to you.
However,

please always think of me fondly.

Love,

Ivy

Audrey crumbled the note and it fell onto the floor of the
boat. After that, she screamed. Tragedies were supposed to be something that she watched
on the news, not witnessed first- hand. But no explanation was necessary about how cruel
life was and the universe often had a twisted sense of humor.

Tears welled in Audrey’s eyes. Nothing could’ve prepared
her for this moment, because she wanted to cry. And cry. And cry. Ivy couldn’t be dead; she
was only thirty-seven. So, she still had a little more than half her life left.

Ivy was in trouble and Audrey hadn’t seen the signs. So,

Audrey’d never forgive herself for Ivy’s suicide. Audrey had
failed Ivy, and she couldn’t fathom how she’d continue with life.

Audrey’s throat tightened. Perhaps Ivy’s death was only
meant to resemble a suicide and was really murder. There was a reason people always
touted the saying about life being stranger than fiction. Audrey shook her head. Yeah, that
had to have been it. Ivy
couldn’t
have been desperate enough to commit
suicide.

The only thing Audrey was certain of was that Ivy was
nowhere to be found. And that was why she’d get to the bottom of Ivy’s death. Whether
someone murdered Ivy or Ivy actually committed suicide, there
had to be more to
the story.

plot lines into an unputdownable read.

Excerpt

The air was dense, choking me
with its acrid stench. I found myself in an unending void, where even my own body seemed
to disappear into the oppressive blackness. But the silence was the worst of all—a soundless
void that made my eardrums ache with its sheer weight.

Then, a light—faint at
first—began to pulse in the distance. A scarlet bloom beckoning me closer. As I drew near,
the light revealed itself to be a door, slightly ajar, emanating an even deeper blackness than
the void around it. From within, whispers floated out, layered over each other until they
became a cacophony of desperate cries and muffled screams.

“Join us. Save us. Take
us.”

Unable to resist its pull, I pushed
the door wider. Inside was an endless expanse of contorted, writhing figures, locked in a
dance of agony. Their skin seared, peeling away to reveal muscle and bone, yet they moved
as if in rhythm to some ghastly melody.

And there, in the midst of the
tormented crowd, was Thomas. His once bright brown eyes were now hollow, devoid of
hope or recognition. Chains wrapped around his body, pulling him deeper into the throng. I
tried to scream, to shout his name, to reach out, but my voice was stolen by the void, and
my limbs were weighed down by invisible forces.

My own cries seemed to echo
back to me from the abyss until a blinding surge of scarlet light consumed
everything
